What do I need to get a Library Card?
Children under 18 will need their parent’s to fill out a few things on their card, We do not require any form of ID, you just need to fill out a card with your name, address, phone number and signature.

How many books can I check out?
New patrons can only check out five items the first time they use their card. DVDs, Videos, and Magazines are restricted to three per household, and you must be 18 to check out DVDs. Beyond these few rules library use is unrestricted within reason.

How do I use a computer at the library?
If you have a library card you enter your first and last name, along with your library barcode, if you are still having trouble ask any staff member for help they can show you how to log on to our computers. For one time use you can get a temporary number at the front desk this is ideal for those of you visiting Independence. Adults can log into our computers for one hour a day while children receive 40 minutes during the summer and 30 minutes during the school year.

Does the Library have Wifi Access?
The Independence Public Library has Wifi access throughout the building, when you search for a list of available networks you should see a network called IPLKSPublic, connecting to that network allows you to use our wireless access.

How much does printing cost at the library?
Printing from the computers costs 10 cents per page, and you get the first three free every day. Our copy machines and microfilm machines are 25 cents a page.

I’m looking for a book and you don’t have it what do I do?
You have a couple options here, if it’s a book you think we need you can fill out a form at the front desk and we’ll look into purchasing it, or you can fill out an interlibrary loan request and we can try and borrow it from another library.

Does the libraries internet have a filter?
The Independence Public Library does have a filter on our public computers; however, no filter has one hundred percent reliability in filtering. The Library can not monitor internet usage, so be sure you are using safe browsing habits and if your children use the computers at the library instruct them to do likewise.

Does the library have a meeting room my group can use?
The library meeting room is reserved for library programming if your group would like to sponsor a program contact the library at 620-331-3030.

I don’t know how to use a computer can you help me?
The library staff can offer limited help using our computers. If you need further instructions in basic computer knowledge keep an eye out for the computer classes we offer throughout the year.

Does the Library have a bookdrop?
Yes, the bookdrop is located on the east side of the building; it’s silver and hard to miss.

Can I volunteer at the library?
Sure, we could use volunteers in a number of areas from shelving books to helping with programs or displays. The Kansas room is staffed completely by volunteers and is always looking for new people. You should also consider joining the Friends of the Independence Public Library. You can pick up an application at the front desk.
